Think Tank |
Return of Tecmac-WatchIt was a difficult time and a kind of sabbatical, which we hope is over. We are back now with your favorite newsletter. Ed. The Algebra of TelecomAt a recent Telecom Summit we read that a few telecom bigwigs were lamenting cthe issue of low and falling ARPU. In an issue of telecoms.com, (www.telecoms.com) some amusement came our way out of the tragedy when we read a Bharti professional claiming that his company did not really care for ARPU…. hHe said what they really cared about instead was minutes of usage! It is like saying that we don’t really care about mileage in a car…just the total cost of miles traveled. (hmm… misraji… on re-reading the article, this merely seems to be like a change in approach. And maybe there’s some logic to it. We as customers do not calculate our average revenue. We consume service on cost per minute. So is there some advantage for a company to apply the same basis for its financial modeling practice? Content is…DingWe still remember a few years ago as students and novices in the industry listening to everyone and their aunt shouting from every possible forum and medium that Content was King. A very recent survey of developed markets shows that the share of content in the telecom business is much lower than the superblown expectations. What is even funnier is that when we tried to ferret out those tall-tale projections we found that even the links had expired…presumably along with the accuracy of the predictions. At Techmac we still would like to venture to still maintain that Voice will remain the bread of telecom operators for at least next two years. However the reader would do well to save this newsletter….this link would in all probability also expire. We hope our judgementjudgment performs slightly better. Don’t talk about ringing in the NewWe hear that the Russian government is probably planning for ADC but operators are against it. Don’t quite know who is correct but the result of ADC is definitely not visible in India. And yes, ILD calls are definitely costly.
Since we cannot do much about the kkdramas on
television, we have decided to trai and do something about the dramas of
out ttTelecom world. And what we plan to do is to bring them to your
notice as effectively as we can. So hang in there with us…“Dream Undreamt”. |

Headache Of The Year |
|
| Einstein invested his whole life in experiments, Edison lost himself in few components and Rishies spent their maximum time in search of GOD. We all enjoy the benefits extended by these but most of us do not want to live like that. We’ve our own definition of life and few of us even criticize their way of loosing the so called pleasure of the materialistic world. Magic of this world is invent of those great minds as well as hearts still few of us laugh on them and their logic may be correct. This year we request you to think “What is that which makes few to spend whole life on something which takes them away from natural life?” What creates the difference between our ambitions, pleasures and imagination. | |

Who (Really) Earns Forex For India? |
|
When it comes to talk no one can beat IT Business. It always seems to steals the show. But only till Forex managers begin to talk about real forex earnings. Then suddenly the less swanky faces of the Old Economy invariably show up. Industries like Metal, Cement and Petroleum have made and continue to make significant growth in last few years. Any time spent on watching bigwigs of industries talking about growth and lobbying government over more relief may earn the erroneous belief that the IT juggernaut would crushing every other sector through its big and well rehearsed talk of 100% export business. Whilst it is ture that IT is more profitable, but in sheer volume of earnings it seems that Old is where the (forex) gold is! |

The Quick Telecom Status Report: An all-consuming market |
Day Dreams |
|
In the Telecom market we have moved from around Rs. 16 per call to Re. 1 or even lower, per call. Undoubtedly this is one of the cheapest tariffs in the world…but the Consumer is happily asking for more! Maybe we get down to the dreaded four letter word…FREE! Hello! Maybe we will finally have the operator pay us for making a call?! <<Click Here For Complete Article> |
1- Reliance and Bharti may emerge as true competitors instead of BSNL v/s Bharti or Reliance v/s BSNL. 2-This time tariff cut may hit BSNL. (This section is a part of our annual paper which will be issued in the Tecmac Foundation Month since next year. Suggestions and contents are expected from our readers) |

Mr Vendor- You Need Business, Not Charity |
|
Admitedly it's not very innovative or creative to say that innovation and
creativity were the two prime tools that successful telecom vendors used
most to move technology, and therefore, business along. It was this
vibrant vendor power which drove the rapid changes in telecom services
through the early years. Soon, however, technology became the
overflogged horse
